8/8 Stables at Nine Ashes Farm 40 metres WNW of - house

GV II

Stables. Late C16, road frontage rebuilt in 2 phases in C18, reroofed and altered internally in early C19. Square, red brick, single storey, stable block on N side of entrance to Nine Ashes. Low pitched, U-shaped, slate hipped roof with king post trusses and twin gables on E. 2 stable doors in heavy chamfered frames on S side. Twin doors joined in similar heavy frame in middle of E side. Blocked window opening on N. Thick old red brick walls with external plinth in English bond. W wall on roadside rebuilt and set back in early C18 (N part has black headers in Flemish bond). Whitewashed timberframed weatherboarded interior divisions as stabling for 12 horses with tack room and store (sale catalogue of 898 in HRO). An historic stable block mentioned in a description of 1600 (HLHS (1979) 35) and part of the buildings of Sir Thomas Forster's mansion. Important roadside feature as part of the group of historic buildings at Nine Ashes.
