Description
The stables at Nine Ashes Farm, located 40 metres west-northwest of the house, date from the late 16th century. The road frontage was rebuilt in two phases during the 18th century, and the building was reroofed and altered internally in the early 19th century. This square, single-storey stable block is constructed of red brick and is situated on the north side of the entrance to Nine Ashes. It features a low-pitched, U-shaped slate hipped roof supported by king post trusses, with twin gables on the east side.
On the south side, there are two stable doors framed in heavy chamfered frames, while the east side has twin doors joined in a similar heavy frame. There is a blocked window opening on the north side. The thick old red brick walls have an external plinth in English bond, and the west wall, facing the road, was rebuilt and set back in the early 18th century, with the northern part featuring black headers in Flemish bond.
The interior includes whitewashed timber-framed weatherboarded divisions designed for stabling 12 horses, along with a tack room and store, as noted in a sale catalogue from 1898 in the Hampshire Record Office. This historic stable block is mentioned in a description from 1600 and is part of the buildings associated with Sir Thomas Forster's mansion. It serves as an important roadside feature within the group of historic buildings at Nine Ashes.
