Description
This footbridge, built in 1848, is located in the grounds 40 meters north of North Road House in Hertford. Designed by architect Thomas Smith, it features a cast-iron structure with gault brick and stucco abutments. The bridge has segmentally arched girders adorned with trellis-pattern spandrels and handrails that display a bamboo-form lattice pattern. The abutments are designed with piers that have caps and ramped downswept connectors that join the handrails.
Historically, Thomas Smith acquired additional land in the mid-1840s to enhance the setting of his house by landscaping the island between the mill stream and the River Beane, following the picturesque style of J.C. Loudun. The folly located north of the river, now part of the grounds of Beane River View, as well as the gazebo in the grounds of Rockall, Rockleigh, were constructed as part of the garden architecture.
