Description

Nos 76-78 High Street is a former dwelling that now features a shop front on the ground floor. It was built in 1863 and has undergone late 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick, with ashlar limestone dressings and blue brick diaper work. It has coped gables, tall ridge chimney stacks with corbelled heads, and is topped with a plain tile roof, all in the Victorian Gothic style.

The street elevation consists of two storeys and attics, with a tall gable on the left and a gabled dormer on the right side of the roof slope. The left gable includes two 2-light mullioned windows with sash frames set within cusped arched heads, beneath a cambered brick relieving arch. At the apex of the gable, there is a single light window with a pointed arched head, decorated with diaper work in the surrounding brick, which includes the date "1863" and the linked initials "J.R.".

On the right side, there is a 2-light window on the first floor and a single light roof gabled dormer with a steeply-pitched roof. The shop front features a shallow stall riser, a spindle frame for the shop windows with brackets at the corners, and rectangular overlights. There is a wide glazed door in the centre and a secondary doorway to the right with a replacement integral fanlight door. This building is a well-detailed and prominently-sited example of Victorian Gothic architecture, which groups well with Nos 80-86 High Street.
