Description

Ragged Hall is a house dating from the 16th century, with an internal chimney added in the mid-17th century, and a projecting west wing built around 1960. An eastern extension was added in 1962. The original structure features a timber frame encased in red brick, with red brick extensions and a tile-hung upper part on the west wing. The building has steep old red tile roofs, with the west wing having a hipped roof.

The main part of the house is 1.5 storeys high and faces south, featuring a central narrow chimney-bay flanked by wider bays to the east and west, each containing one window and one gabled dormer at the eaves on both the front and rear. The eastern extension has a similar design with one window and a front dormer. Access to the west bay is through a battened door located under a gabled open timber porch. A large chimney, made of narrow brick with a triangular projecting rib at the front, rises on the front slope of the roof against the ridge.

The ground floor has 2-light flush casement leaded windows with segmental arches. The wide, rectangular two-storey west wing has an external side chimney and projects at both the front and rear. Inside, the house features an exposed timber frame with curved tension braces, wide-spaced studs, chamfered beams, and squared joists. The roof structure consists of clasped-purlin construction on collar-and-queen-strut trusses with curved wind-braces. There is evidence of an inserted floor and a later lobby-entry by the chimney.
