Description
Arne Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with a northern range that includes a late medieval bay at the eastern end. An inserted floor and chimney were added in the early 17th century, and a taller southern wing was constructed in the early 18th century. The building features a timber frame resting on a brick sill, with red brick infill and walls in the southern wing, and painted brick infill on the northern front. It has steep old red tile roofs and is L-shaped, facing north. The house is 1½ storeys high, while the southern wing has 2 storeys and an attic. The northern front displays regular square panels of timber framing, two gabled dormers, two casement windows, and a boarded door leading into the western bay. There is a large internal chimney in the eastern bay that serves the middle bay. The two remaining bays of the original house were once open to the roof, and the floor beams and joists in both bays appear to be of the same date. The eastern bay served as the hall, while the western bay was likely a parlour and store room. The house may have originally extended further east, but this section was removed when the southern wing was built, leaving a cross passage that has been preserved as a store room.
