Description
The Cow Roast Inn is a house that has been converted into an inn, dating from the 17th century or earlier. It features a 17th-century east wing, which is brick cased in the 18th century, and an early 19th-century southeast wing that projects to the east. There is also a 19th-century parallel rear extension to the original west range. The building is constructed with a timber frame, which is brick cased and roughcast. The west gable displays exposed 18th-century red brick and 19th-century buff brick. The west range has a hipped slate roof with a plastered eaves soffit, while the east wing has a steep red tile roof.
This two-storey L-shaped building faces north, with a long projecting front wing that encloses the east side of the forecourt. The entrance is located in the angle, leading into the flat wing. The building has a painted black plinth and features three-light casement windows that are set nearly flush. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a pitched hood supported by shaped brackets. Each wing has two windows on each floor.
Inside, there are exposed timber frames, a chamfered and stopped axial beam, and a fireplace lintel above a wide fireplace in the west range, which includes a recess for an oven. The name "Cow Roast" is believed to suggest that it served as a resting place for drovers transporting cows to the London market.
