Description

This is a First World War memorial, constructed around 1920. It stands on London Road, near the centre of Bourne End, close to the Grade II-listed Anchor public house. The memorial is set within a railed enclosure and sits on a paved stone foundation. It takes the form of a limestone cross with a Celtic head, rising from a tapering shaft. The shaft is set on a moulded and chamfered plinth, which in turn rests on a three-tier octagonal stone base. The cross is decorated with carved interlace and knotwork. An inscription in black lettering, “1914/1919”, is on the front (south) face of the shaft. The plinth is inscribed with a dedication “TO / THE GLORY OF GOD / AND TO THE / MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / NAMES.” The top tier of the stone base is inscribed “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE".
