Description
The farmhouse at Stocks Farm is a 1908 building designed by Smith and Brewer for Mrs. Humphrey Ward, a novelist who lived at Stocks House nearby. It is constructed of plum brick with red brick dressings, a wooden eaves cornice, and a steeply pitched red tile roof. The house is a symmetrical, two-story structure with five windows facing east, in a subdued Queen Anne revival style. The design incorporates a red brick plinth that extends upwards as aprons to the lower windows, red rusticated interrupted quoins, triple brackets supporting the wide painted eaves cornice, and two large square chimneys positioned symmetrically just behind the ridge. It features flush box sash windows with segmental heads, each window having 6/6 panes and set within segmental red brick arches. The central front door is panelled with an upper half, and is protected by a wooden doorcase featuring oval fluted pilasters and a segmental pediment, with a single brick step leading up to it. There are two windows on each floor at the south end. A single-storey outhouse is attached to the north side. The building is included in the listing for its group value.
