Description
Stocks Dovecot is a dovecot built in 1753, as indicated by the blue bricks on the south front, and it may have been restored in the 19th century. It was constructed for the Duncombe family, owners of Stocks Manor. The dovecot is made of red brick with blue brick diaper patterns and features a steep red tile roof along with a central turret that is weatherboarded and tiled.
This tall, single-storey rectangular building faces south and is located beside the road. The roof runs north to south, and the building is wider than it is deep. It has a projecting plinth and an eaves band. The central boarded door is framed heavily and has a 2-light unglazed rectangular fanlight above it, with no arch in the brickwork. There are small 2-light unglazed windows in heavy frames set high in the middle of the east side. A pilaster is present at the east end of the north wall, while the north and west walls are plain.
At the center of the ridge, there is a square weatherboarded turret with a pitched tiled roof, which features three pigeon openings with shelves on the south end. Inside, the walls are lined with twin nesting boxes made of brick that reach up to the eaves level. The corner posts of the turret rise from two beams that rest on the two purlins, and there are timber lintels above the door and window openings.
