Description

The Cemetery Mortuary Chapel in Cheshunt was built in 1855 and is designed in a simple early Gothic style. It is constructed from yellow stock brick with cement and stone dressings, topped by a steep slate roof. The chapel presents a unified symmetrical appearance with all architectural details preserved. It is a single-storey building featuring a central square belfry with a spire that has two stages.

The elevation consists of three units: the outer sections are steep-roofed chapels that include gabled porches flanked by lancet windows. The lower central unit has two outer gabled projections with twin lancets and a central gabled porch, which, like the others, features attached shafts and moulded arches. Angled, stepped buttresses support the projections, and crosses adorn the apexes. The windows are fitted with square cast-iron latticework, and the gables include quatrefoil blind panels. A trefoiled eaves cornice decorates the belfry, and porches are present on the side elevations. The chapel is set in a picturesque evergreen environment.
