Description

Cheshunt Great House is a 15th-century building that was partially destroyed by fire in 1965. At the time of the fire, it consisted of one wing of a courtyard house, which included a hall that was originally longer and featured a 15th-century timber roof with wind-braces, as well as an early 18th-century staircase. The exterior was covered in brick between 1762 and 1772, with further alterations made after 1806, including the addition of a Gothick entrance facade to the south end of the hall. The remains include a cellar and parts of the west wall, which is made of red brick with modern coping. Inside, there are three rooms, each with marble flooring; the northern room has some patterned terracotta tiling, while the southern room, which serves as the undercroft to the hall, features a black and white marble floor and the remains of five stone and cemented-brick octagonal columns with moulded bases and capitals. There are also remnants of an attached octagonal staircase tower at the southwest corner and some 15th-century roof wind braces fixed to the walls. Additionally, the stone base of the 1806 entrance porch can be found on the south side.
