Description
The Church of St. Giles is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Road in Great Hallingbury. It has been significantly rebuilt and remodeled by G.E. Pritchett in 1874, but it retains a fine late 11th-century chancel arch and west window, as well as a 14th-century west tower. The tower measures 10.5 feet square and is constructed from flint rubble and clunch, with Barnack stone dressings. It features three stages, thin diagonal buttresses, a crenellated parapet, and a southeast stair turret. The octagonal shingle spire was added in 1873. The other external walls, including the porch, are made from matching materials and are primarily Victorian, with plain red tile roofs.
Inside, the main highlight is the complete early Norman chancel arch, made entirely of Roman bricks, with unmoulded stepped bricks forming the inposts. A rare piscina, which likely served the rood loft, is positioned high to the right of the arch. The Victorian arcade consists of circular piers topped with richly carved foliage capitals. There is also a late 11th-century window in the southwest wall made of Roman brick. The south doorway features a moulded two-centre arch within a square head, complete with a moulded label, traceried spandrels, and blank shields.
