Description
The Church of England Primary School, built around 1848, is a single-storey village school constructed of red brick featuring a black diaper pattern of headers, designed in a restrained Jacobean style. The building has a symmetrical H-plan layout with a central porch cross-wing that projects further. The roofs are covered with stone slates, although the rear and part of the side have been replaced with concrete slates. The gable ends of the wings include saddle stones and Portland stone kneelers, while the eaves are supported by moulded brick corbels.
On either side of the porch, there are three buttresses with stone offsets that articulate the main block. The school features three four-centred arched doorways with chamfered edges; one doorway in the central porch is blocked and has an inscribed plaque above it. The window openings are chamfered with flat gauged brick arches, and the casements have lozenge pattern glazing bars, with two lights in the main block and three lights in the crosswings. Additionally, there are three tall cruciform plan chimney stacks on the ridges of the crossovers, along with two boiler vents and a bellcote symmetrically placed on the main ridge. This school is a carefully detailed example of its period and is well positioned in relation to the nearby church.
