Description

15 Castle Street is a house dating from the 16th century, with early 20th-century changes to its windows and late 20th-century renovations. It has a timber-framed structure with 20th-century basket pargetting and a peg-tiled roof. The house has a rectangular plan and features a single-storey addition at the rear yard. It stands two storeys tall.

The front (south) elevation has a tall, narrow range of two windows, all of which are early 20th-century with roll-moulded frames and central stiles. The windows are two-lights with glazing bars, featuring 4x4 panes. The doorway is also moulded and has a boarded door with upper glazed panes.

The rear (north) elevation is partly obscured but includes a stack recessed at the west end with a lean-to roof. There is a first-floor casement window, and to the east, there is another first-floor two-light casement window with glazing bars, featuring 4x3 panes. Above, there is a flat-roofed two-light dormer window, and below, a deep slate-roofed ground-floor lean-to is present.

The east end of the house reveals the frame of the adjoining property, No. 17. The building exhibits jetty construction, although the front has been cut back to be flush. The end of the collar purlin of the crown-post roof is also visible. This house is part of what was once a longer, long-jettied block that ran parallel to the street.
