Description
39 Castle Street is an almshouse, now a private house, built around 1880. The building features red brick construction with a plain tile roof that has cresting. The upper part of the front is rendered and pargetted with applied timber framing. There is a red brick stack located at the center of the right side wall. The structure has two bays and two storeys, with a gable end facing the street.
The front of the building is jettied on brackets. On the ground floor, there is a boarded door and a three-light casement window with a canted brick sill, both situated under segmental brick arches. The first floor has a pair of two-light small paned casement windows. The gable features barge-boards and a louvred opening with two lights and trefoiled heads at the apex. This almshouse was built by the Saffron Walden Almshouse Trustees, who acquired the property in 1879.
