Description

16 Castle Street is a house dating from around 1800. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, featuring ashlar lining on a brick plinth, all of which is colourwashed. The roof is slate, and there is a red brick stack in stretcher bond. The building has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall.

The north front elevation has two window ranges with sash windows that have moulded architraves and thin glazing bars. The first floor windows consist of three panes by four panes, while the ground floor includes one window of four panes by four panes, along with a cellar grille below. There is an adjacent doorway with an overlight, and the door has four beaded flush panels and a round-headed footscraper in the plinth. The stack is positioned off-centre to the west.

The south rear elevation is similar to the front, featuring a ground floor doorway that has been restored in the 20th century, complete with a moulded architrave. This door has two glazed upper panes and a single depressed moulded panel. A window on the ground floor matches the front's four panes by four panes, while the first floor has two three-light casement windows with glazing bars, each with three panes by two panes.

On the east end elevation, there are two early 20th-century three-light windows on the ground floor and one two-light window on the first floor. Timber wallplates are visible. Inside, there is a large axial ceiling joist on the ground floor, positioned off-centre towards the front, suggesting that the house may have an earlier design from the 17th century.
