Description

Chestnuts is a 15th century or earlier hall house located on Dunmow Road in Takeley. It features projecting crosswings that were formerly jettied but are now underbuilt, with the roof oversailing on the west wing. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a red plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range, with 19th century double hung vertical sliding sashes that are glazed in margins. An early 17th century red brick chimney stack with attached shafts is present. There is a lean-to extension at the rear and a 19th century single storey extension at the east end, which has a grey slate roof. Inside, part of the original frame is exposed.
