Description

A 14th-century timber-framed and plastered hall house, with peg tile roofs. Originally a two-bay open hall house, it features a contemporary solar/service cross-wing to the west. An “in-line” parlour bay to the east was soon altered to mimic a further cross-wing. A two-bay, 16th-century kitchen/service block adjoins the rear, also with a gabled peg tile roof. The roofs are generally gabled, with a hip at the rear of the west cross-wing and a gabled dormer to the front. Windows are a mix of 19th-century casements with glazing bars and some old cast iron casements. Both cross-wings retain their original decorative bargeboards with ogee cusping. The hall retains its original roof line, but now includes an inserted 16th-century floor and an old brick stack. Original arch braces remain, some damaged, and there is a moulded tie beam along with elaborate cross quadrant crown posts in both the hall and the west cross-wing. Remnants of an ogee-headed front door and the original doorways for the western service entrance and parlour can be seen. The west cross-wing has a possible 17th-century external wall stack, a chamfered mantel beam, and an original moulded, pegged shelf. An original hewn oak ladder stair survives in the back room. Fragments of external and internal pargeting and wall painting remain. A diamond mullion window opening, now lacking its mullions, retains a shutter pelmet that was nailed in place. The rear kitchen block has a simple crown post roof with serpentine bracing, and floor joists with central tenons.
