Description
The Swan Public House, formerly known as The Swan Inn, is a public house dating from around 1400 and later. It is two storeys tall, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. The roof is covered with peg tiles, gabled at the west end and hipped at the east, featuring a gabled extension at the rear and a single-storey lean-to at the back.
The front of the building has an off-centre doorcase with a simple pediment and four double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the upper floor. The ground floor includes two angled, flat-roofed bays from the early 19th century and a similar pair of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. A substantial rectangular red brick chimney stack is located off-centre.
Originally an open hall house from around 1400, the building underwent alterations in the 16th century when the front was sheared off, and a floor and stack were inserted. The interior retains interesting features, including remnants of a cross-passage that is integral with the cross-wing, a wide 'spered' opening, remnants of a crown post roof, and cross-wing floor joists with soffit tenons.
