Description

The Old Vicarage is a late 15th-century timber-framed house, significantly altered in the 17th and 19th centuries. Situated on Church Street in Great Chesterford, it originally stood as a country club. The upper storey of the east side features plaster panels with decorative swags and a central oval panel bearing the date 1672. On the north front, the upper storey is gabled and jettied, supported by moulded brackets on the north and a carved corner post. Small casement windows are present throughout. The north front’s ground storey includes a small, later 19th-century oriel bay window, and above the jetty, an ornamental plaster band. The west front has a small original ground storey window with two lights, featuring carved spandrels and a moulded frame, set beneath the jettied upper storey. The interior is notable for its richly moulded beams and wallposts.
