Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I listed building located in Strethall. This flint rubble structure features a very small nave that dates back to the early 11th century, with Saxon origins. The church was re-roofed in the 15th century when the west tower was constructed, along with most of the chancel. A restoration in the 19th century added a north vestry and a south porch.
The west tower is unbuttressed and has a plain parapet with stone bands. The nave measures 26 feet by 15 feet and showcases Saxon long and short work at the west angle. The chancel arch from the 11th century features a roughly moulded label and decorated imposts. The south doorway, also from the 11th century, was altered in the 15th century. Above the tower arch, there is a small original window. Inside the nave, there are about 12 small pews, two of which at the west end are from the 15th century.
In the north wall of the chancel, there is a recessed altar tomb with a canopy dedicated to John Gardyner, Lord of the Manor, who died in 1508, along with two palimpsest brasses from the 15th and 16th centuries, one of which commemorates a priest. The font dates from the late 12th century. The church is recognized for its architectural and historical significance.
