Description
The Church of St Mary and St Clement is a Grade I listed building located on Clavering Pelham Road. This flint rubble church dates from the late 14th century and early 15th century. It features a nave, aisles, chancel, and south porch, all of which are battlemented. The west tower has angle buttresses and a battlemented parapet. The chancel was constructed in the late 14th century, while the remainder of the church was built at the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th century. The nave consists of five bays and includes a large clerestory and an original angel roof. Notable fittings within the church include a 13th-century octagonal font made of Purbeck marble, a 17th-century carved pulpit on a 15th-century stem, several 17th-century monuments, and 16th and 17th-century brasses. There is also some 15th and 17th-century stained glass. The church underwent moderate restoration in the 19th century. It is situated near the moated site of Clavering Castle and the 13th-century manor house known as "The Bury." The church is recognized for its architectural, historical, and topographical significance.
