Description

Farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 14th century, with substantial remodeling in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and later alterations. The exterior is rendered over a timber frame, with a gabled old tile roof. A late 16th/early 17th century brick ridge stack features diagonally-set flues, while a 19th-century brick stack sits laterally to the right. The plan consists of a hall house with a service bay to the left, with a first floor and cross wing added in the late 16th/early 17th centuries. The left side of the house presents a single-storey, two-window arrangement, with a two-storey gable end forming the cross wing. A bracketed, gabled hood covers a 20th-century door, while 20th-century windows are also present, along with two gabled dormers. A rear extension was added in 1984/5.

Inside, the central truss of the open hall, situated to the left of the centre, features heavy, jowled posts and pointed arched bracing to chamfered tie beams. Tension bracing to the right-side wall of the open hall indicates a former “high end.” The roof reveals smoke-blackened rafters and a collar purlin. A 20th-century lintel covers an open fireplace associated with a late 16th/early 17th century brick stack, accompanied by a roll-stopped chamfered beam relating to an inserted floor of the same date. A dormer window on the right side shows mortice holders for a late 16th/early 17th century diamond-mullioned window. The cross wing has a collar-truss roof of slight scantling. The main block is one storeyed with attics, and the cross wing is two storeyed. Modern casement windows are present. The roof is tiled, with a half-hip at the east end, and it includes an internal shafted chimney stack set diagonally upon a square base.
