Description

The Limes is a house dating back to the 16th century or earlier, with significant alterations in the early 17th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with gabled peg tile roofs. The main block has two stories and attics, featuring three gables on its eastern front. A two-story, crosswing-like block of earlier timber framing, also with a gabled peg tile roof, is situated at the northern end of the house. Above this is a lop-sided third story, partially over the main range's roof. A 17th-century staircase tower and extension wrap around and project from the crosswing. A large, 20th-century, single-story gabled extension with a peg tile roof is located at the center of the west side, with a lean-to at the southern end of the main block. A complex, 17th-century stack is positioned centrally on the east front and takes the shape of joined shafts. The east front has short parapets linking the three gables, each of which contains three-light 20th century casement windows. Beneath the north and south gables are two-story projecting window bays with casements and lean-to peg tile roofs. A single double-hung sash window is centrally located on the first floor, beneath which is an early 19th-century doorcase featuring Doric half columns, a flat hood, and a frieze decorated with diamond and lions' head motifs, flanked by double-hung sash windows. Another 17th-century stack stands against the flank of the earlier crosswing. The interior reveals a timber-framed house of three bays and a stack bay, with plaster-faced fireplaces featuring four-centred arches and stop-chamfered beams; one post displays a grotesque male head as a jowl. Some rooms contain early 19th-century panelling.
