Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Chickney is a historic building dating from the late 10th century or early 11th century, featuring a nave, an early 13th century chancel, and a 14th century west tower. The structure is built from flint rubble with limestone and clunch dressings, topped with a red plain tile roof. The west tower consists of three stages, has a pyramid roof, and diagonal buttresses, along with a 14th century tower arch and a partially restored west window. The upper stages of the tower include 14th century windows. The nave contains a 14th century door and windows, as well as two pre-Conquest windows. The chancel features a 14th century east window and a 13th century moulded string with foliate stops, along with four early 13th century lancet windows. Remnants of the pre-Conquest chancel include parts of blocked windows. There is an early 14th century chancel arch and a 15th century squint. The early 15th century south porch is timber, and the seven-cant chancel roof is likely original. The early 14th century nave roof is a crown post design with a clasping head and a moulded base and capital on the central post. Additionally, there is a 14th century font with a 16th century cover and an early 13th century trefoil-headed piscina.
