Description

A terrace of eight workers' houses, built in the early to mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of gault brick with slate roofs. They are arranged on a rectangular plan and are two storeys high with cellars, featuring short, square 19th-century chimney-pots above each pair of houses. The row is built in two identical runs of four, stepped to follow the sloping road which descends to the north, with external steps leading to the front doors increasing in height towards the northern end.

The front, western elevation features a central, round-arched rear access passageway with a stable-style door in each run. A lower framed and boarded door is located between numbers 10 and 12, and original red and yellow brick paving is found between numbers 18 and 20, with blind window apertures above. All houses have a single ground-floor and first-floor window, slightly segment-headed. Most houses retain original sash windows with glazing bars (4x4 panes), lacking horns. The original front doors to numbers 8, 10, 14 and 20 have flush, bead-moulded panels. Six original cellar windows remain, four incorporating street grilles.

The rear elevations are red brick, all houses now have single-storey, flat-roofed 20th-century additions. Most of the first-floor windows have been replaced, but originally they were 4x4-paned casement windows. The south-facing elevation has a 1x2-paned casement window on the first floor, while the roof void has a 2x3-paned casement. The north-facing elevation is gault brick with a similar 2x3-paned casement to the roof void. Crown-glass window panes remain in numbers 8, 14, 20 and 22.
