Description

Almshouse tenements built in 1881 by G.S. Gibson. The building is constructed of red brick with slate roofs and features a double T plan, along with 20th-century additions. It stands two storeys high. The front northwest elevation is symmetrical with a six-window range, two facade gables, and two doorways. There are three stacks, and the windows have slight segment heads with horned sashes that include glazing bars and consist of three by four panes. The doors are boarded and battened, topped with lean-to hoods supported by wooden brackets on stone corbels and shaped tiles. The gables have barge-boards and central plaques that read "ALMSHOUSE TENEMENTS" and "ERECTED BY G.S. GIBSON 1881." The stacks are rectangular with four clustered shafts. The rear southeast elevation mirrors the front but includes two 20th-century red brick two-storey gabled additions aligned with the front gables. The 19th-century rear wall has four 19th-century windows on each storey, featuring casements with glazing bars and three by three panes. The extensions have two-light metal casement windows with glazing bars and four by three panes. There are two windows on the first floor, one on the southwest and one on the northeast sides of the ground floor. The ground floor also features slated lean-to twin recessed porches with 19th-century boarded doors, which appear to have been moved from their original back door positions. The northeast and southwest end elevations are plain, with a central stack that projects slightly.
