Description
Lingford's Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that has been extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof made of corrugated tiles. The cottage consists of two bays and features a timber-framed chimney at the northeast end. A brick chimney stack was added to the northwest in the 19th century, along with lean-to extensions on the northwest and southwest sides. Originally, the cottage had a thatched roof. In 1969, it was significantly extended to the southwest and northeast, and the roof was re-clad with corrugated tiles. The building is single-storey with attics and has a two-storey crosswing added in the 20th century to the northeast. All the windows are 20th-century casements, and there are three gabled dormers. Both the interior and exterior have undergone many alterations. The most notable feature of historical and architectural value is the timber-framed chimney, which is infilled with wattle and daub and remains virtually intact, making it a rare survival. This chimney was used with an open fire until October 1982, after which it was converted for use with a wood-burning stove, and the hearth was lined with brickwork. For illustrations of the cottage before major alterations, refer to Planning Application W/DUN/31/69.
