Description

The Church of St Michael is a Grade I listed building located on the west side of Great Sampford High Street. This church, primarily constructed in the 14th century using flint and stone rubble with stone dressings, features a south chapel that dates to the late 13th century and was originally the transept of an earlier church. It is believed to have been built by the Knights Hospitallers. The north arcade of the nave and the north aisle were built around 1320-1330, while the chancel was completed around 1340. The south aisle, south porch, and west tower were added around 1350. The parapet of the south aisle is from the 15th century, and the interior staircase to the tower dates to the 16th century.

The west tower is notable for its angle buttresses and castellated parapet. The chancel windows are particularly impressive, featuring fine tracery, especially the large five-light east window. Inside, the chancel showcases stone arcades with clustered columns and cusped pointed arches above stone benches. The north wall contains 11 bays, and the south wall has 15 bays, each believed to have seated one of the Knights Hospitallers. The arch leading from the south aisle into the chapel is adorned with exquisite stone carvings of foliage, a cowled head, animals, and birds. In the south wall of the chapel, there is a 14th-century tomb recess with crocketted gables. The stone font features a 14th-century traceried stem and a plain bowl from the 15th century. Additionally, there is a 16th-century oak cupboard. The church serves as a focal point for the village and is recognized for its architectural, historical, and topographical significance.
