Description

No. 9 Market Row is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century, located on sloping ground between Market Row and Butchers Row in Saffron Walden. It is constructed of red brick, featuring some burnt headers, and has a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and consists of two and three storeys. The south front elevation faces Market Row and showcases brickwork with ruddled mortar and white tuck pointing.

The front is three storeys high and has a three-window range, with windows that include thin glazing bars. The principal ground floor is on the middle storey, accessed by five steps leading to a central front door. The doorcase is panelled and features simple outer pilasters and a cornice hood, along with an overlight and a six-panel door. On either side of the door, there are three-canted bay windows that extend down to a lower 'basement' level with a boarded pavement. A stucco string course runs between the floors.

The ground floor windows are sashes with glazing bars in configurations of 1x4, 3x4, and 1x4 panes. The first (top) floor windows have stucco voussoirs, and the outer windows have stucco-shaped aprons that correspond to the bay windows below. These windows are also sashes with glazing bars, each containing three panes. Gable ridge stacks are located at the east and west ends of the building.

The rear north elevation facing Butchers Row is two storeys high and has a three-window range. Its brickwork features scored pointing and well-made brick voussoirs. There is a central doorway with an overlight and a door made of four flush bead moulded panels, along with sash windows containing three by four panes, some of which still have their original glass. The interior of the house is plain.
