Description
The garden wall immediately to the west and south of Amberden Hall dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in random and Flemish bond and serves as the boundary to the garden on the west and south sides of the house, with a short section of 20th-century rebuilding at a reduced height on the south. The wall stands approximately 8 to 10 feet high and features a chamfered plinth, a cogged cornice, and moulded brick capping. Instead of returning to the north, the wall meets the moat on the east side. The Royal Commission on Historic Monuments suggested that the wall may have been part of the northwest wing of the hall built around 1560, which was later demolished; however, it is more likely that part of the wall was constructed using bricks from the demolished wing.
