Description

The Parish Church of St. Leonard is a church with origins dating back to the 14th century, although it was mainly rebuilt around 1854 by C. Hakewill, while retaining some features from the earlier structure. The original part of the church is constructed from plastered rubble, while the newer sections are made of exposed uncoursed rubble with limestone dressings, and the roof is covered with handmade red clay tiles. The chancel is partly from the 14th century, and the nave, north aisle, north vestry, south porch, and west bellcote were added in the 19th century. The east buttresses of the chancel are original, and there is an original doorway in the south wall featuring chamfered jambs and a two-centred arch. Inside the chancel, there is a piscina with moulded jambs, a cinquefoiled head, and a sexfoiled drain, likely from the 15th century. Above the chancel arch, there is a stone carved with the monogram IRS. The communion rail, dating from the early 18th century, has a moulded rail and twisted balusters. Floor slabs, reported by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, commemorate Mrs. R.E. Rathbone in 1689 and Rev. James Rathbone in the early 18th century, but these are now concealed by fitted carpet. In the south porch, there are two moulded wall plates that were reused in the 19th-century structure, along with a 15th-century indent of a figure and inscription. The church houses two bells, one of which is inscribed 'John Darbie made me 1684', although the date is difficult to read from a distance.
