Description

Two cottages, likely dating from the 16th century or earlier. They are timber-framed with plaster rendering and some decorative pargeting. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, with a higher level on the right-hand side. A chimney stack is located on the right. A long wall jetty is supported by seven brackets. The cottages have two storeys and a three-window front. The upper floor has two-light casement windows with small panes. The ground floor has vertically sliding sash windows with small panes, with the window on the left being fixed. The left-hand door is a two-light, two-panel design, while the right-hand door is a four-panel design, both with simple surrounds. In 1796, Robert Bacon, a shoemaker, resided here. The cottages are documented in “Ardleigh in 1796” by F.H. Erith, published in 1978.
