Description
The Martello Tower, built around 1808-1812, is constructed from gault brick with a stone parapet and drain, and features a stone plaque underneath. It has three windows at half height, each with stone surrounds and keystones, while a fourth window is likely hidden by a 20th-century toilet block. There is a door at half height with a stone surround and a segmental head, along with a stone chute beneath it. The base of the tower has two 20th-century doors. The tower has recently been used as an Asian restaurant and now includes a café addition to the right of the door, but it remains largely intact. This tower is one of the Clacton Defence Towers, while the Martello Tower at Beacon Hill, Point Clear has been demolished.
