Description

The Mill Barn Farmhouse, originally a group of cottages, dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. It has been converted and extended to form a single farmhouse. The building is constructed primarily of painted brick in various patterns, with a roof of a mix of handmade red and blue clay tiles, some pantiles, and slate. The layout is complex, consisting of a main range facing southeast, with internal and rear stacks, and an outshut to the rear. An additional wing projects forward to the left, with its own external stack, and another wing extends to the rear of this, featuring a gambrel roof. To the left of this is another wing with a gambrel roof and an end stack, accompanied by early 20th-century extensions to the front and left. A parallel range sits behind the left wing, with a rear stack and a 20th-century lean-to extension to the rear. The farmhouse is mainly one storey high, with attics. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century styles, and there are four 20th-century front doors. The name derives from Thorpe Little Mill, built around 1820, of which only the roundhouse remains nearby. The building was undergoing renovation and combination when surveyed in September 1985.
