Description
Le Soken Antiques is a 16th-century house, altered in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries and now used as a shop and residential property. The building is timber framed and plastered, with some exposed timber framing and weatherboarding on the front, and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It comprises a two-bay range facing northeast and a parallel 18th-century range to the rear. A single-story brick extension from the 19th century is attached to the rear, with one internal stack. The ground floor of the main range features a 20th-century shopfront with a central glazed door, set below a jetty supported on three 20th-century brick piers. An original plain bracket is at the right end of the jetty, with the post below it appearing to have been hacked, but likely originally supporting a shaft. The first floor has two early 19th-century sash windows with a 3 + 6 lights design. The exposed timber framing includes ‘Suffolk’ braces placed outside the studding, with some restoration visible, and an 18th-century timber-framed parapet where the frame is exposed. On the left return, the ground floor is clad in red brick using Flemish bond; the first floor has exposed timber framing, and the gable is weatherboarded. Jowled posts are present. The first floor interior features a rebuilt chamfered axial beam and plain joists of vertical section, along with a clasped purlin roof. The building was formerly part of Homeleigh, which is located immediately to the northwest.
