Description
The Phoenix Steam Mill and Engine House is a disused steam mill and engine house dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of white brick and features a corrugated asbestos-clad roof. The building stands four storeys tall with attics and has moulded cornices at the eaves and return gables, with the cornice continuing through the returns. There is a moulded band above the second storey.
The façade includes a five-window range of cast iron small-paned windows with pivots and cast iron lintels. The ground floor features double doors, each with two panels, while the first floor has a door with two panels and two lights. Above the central doors on the first and second floors are ornate brackets. The returns have two bays with similar windows and single gable windows, although some windows are now boarded up. An adjustable chute held by a chain is attached to the first-floor door.
The rear engine house is built with similar materials and features a moulded cornice and gable cornice, along with a round-headed window on the left return. The roof ridge reaches almost to the height of the second storey, and there are various later attached outbuildings. This structure is noted as one of the earliest purpose-built steam mills in Essex, as referenced in the Batsford Guide to Industrial Archaeology by J. Booker from 1980.
