Description

This building is a barn located 40 metres east-south-east of Great Oakley Hall Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof primarily covered in corrugated iron, although there are some handmade red clay tiles on the southeast midstreys. The barn has thirteen bays oriented from northwest to southeast, featuring two midstreys, each consisting of two bays on the southwest side.

There is an early 19th-century lean-to extension with a slate roof on the northwest side of the northwest midstreys, and a later 19th-century slate-roofed lean-to extension situated between the midstreys. A large 20th-century open lean-to shelter is present on the northeast side. The walls have undergone minor repairs using red brick in Flemish bond.

The barn features a hardwood frame with primary straight bracing and a clasped purlin roof. The four northwest bays and the midstreys were constructed first, featuring arched braces to the tiebeams and the wallplate across the midstreys, and were built without a ridge. The rest of the barn was added later in the 18th century, incorporating bolted knees to the tiebeams and the wallplate across the midstreys. The northwest lean-to extension is depicted in the tithe award of 1841 from the Essex Record Office. The barn was associated with a 600-acre farm until around 1914 and was used for bulk grain storage in 1985.
