Description

Tortworth is a house that dates from the early 19th century or earlier. It is constructed partly of red brick in Flemish bond and partly timber framed, with plastering and weatherboarding. The roof is covered with slate and machine-made red clay tiles. The building has a rectangular plan facing northwest, featuring a large external stack at the right end and a smaller external stack at the left end. There is a 19th-century two-storey brick extension at the rear left, which has an internal stack on the left side and is also roofed with slate. A 20th-century flat-roofed single-storey extension is located at the rear right.

The house has two storeys. On the ground floor, there are two early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights each, set in segmental arches. The first floor features two early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights and a central sash window with 12 lights, all made with crown glass. The entrance has a central six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, and is adorned with a simple canopy supported by profiled brackets. The roof has a steep pitch, with slate on the front and tiles on the back. The right return of the building and the large stack are plastered, while the rear elevation is weatherboarded. The house is depicted in the tithe award of 1840, held at the Essex Record Office.
