Description
The former cowhouse, located to the southeast of Dairy House, dates from around 1777. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick and features a gabled corrugated iron roof. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with a four-window range. The windows have flat gauged brick arches above them, including a blocked window, a narrowed 20th-century window, a 19th-century plank door, and three 20th-century windows. There is an inserted doorway to the left and dentilled brick eaves. A 20th-century plank door to the loft is set in a raking half dormer. At the rear, there is a similar arch over a 19th-century plank door. Inside, the cowhouse has chamfered beams and a clasped-purlin roof. This building was part of a farm complex shown on a map of the Mistley Hall estate from 1778, which is now held in the Essex Records Office. It is included for its group value.
