Description

The Old Ferry House, located on Fambridge Road in Ashingdon, is a house dating from the late 18th century, though it has earlier origins. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped roof covered with red plain tiles. The building stands two storeys tall, with an outshot to the left and a single-storey weatherboarded range to the right. There are various rear ranges, and the gutters are supported by wooden brackets.

The front of the house has a three-window arrangement consisting of small paned vertically sliding sashes with gauged segmental heads. An off-centre, right-positioned four-panelled door is framed with a moulded surround, a frieze, and a dentilled open pediment on brackets. To the left of the outshot, there is a single window, while the right range features two fixed windows and vertically boarded doors on either side.

Inside, notable features include stop-chamfered bridging joists, several simple 18th-century fireplaces, and a 19th-century repositioned staircase, along with an original stair turret at the rear. The 18th-century roof has a steeply cambered tie beam with large brace mortices, likely dating from before the mid-15th century, and includes many re-used sooted rafters.
