Description

The Studio comprises two buildings of the late 20th century, constructed as a house and a separate studio space, arranged around a courtyard garden.

The buildings are of steel frame construction with corrugated steel panel walls and roofs, and concrete slab floors. Both buildings are single-storey with flat roofs. The external structure consists of three freestanding, welded steel portal frames, each spanning 14 metres, braced with diagonal steel tension rods. The flat roofs are covered with plastic-coated corrugated steel, insulation, felt, and chippings, which stiffens the portal frames.

The House is accessed from the east, through a carport and across the courtyard. The east and west elevations feature single-glazed units subdivided with vertical glazed panels in white nylon-coated aluminium frames, with four side-hung doors along each elevation. The north and south elevations are windowless corrugated steel panels, insulated with plasterboard.

The Studio and Carport's entrance is on the south side, within the carport, between a small store and a WC. The external walls are windowless, corrugated steel panels insulated with plasterboard. A triangular, projecting, steel-framed skylight runs east to west across the roof.

The House’s interior features a large living/dining room, occupying approximately a third of the floor space, with a central freestanding stove and accessed from a lobby on the east elevation. A narrower strip to the north is divided into a study and a guest bedroom, both opening directly onto the living space. Beyond this lies a service core containing the kitchen, bathroom and two intercommunicating bedrooms. Sliding partitions replace doors to create an open plan feel. The original colour scheme of white-painted plasterboard and purple, full-height sliding doors remains. The corrugated steel roof forms the ceiling, and original extendable wall lights are still present. Epoxy floors are in the kitchen and bathroom, which have simple fittings.

The Studio space is divided in two by a north-south sliding wooden partition. It has fibreboard walls, a corrugated steel ceiling, and a resin-covered concrete floor.
