Description

Eastcroft is a cottage dating from 1799. It was constructed of timber, with plaster and weatherboard cladding, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The original front elevation has three bays, with an internal stack on the right and an external stack on the left. A rear wing, with an external stack at its end, creates a T-shaped layout. A 19th-century lean-to extension sits in the left rear angle. Later additions include a 20th-century flat-roofed single-story extension to the right rear and to the rear of the rear wing. The cottage has two storeys and originally had a two-window range of 3-light windows, each with one wrought iron casement and rectangular leading; these remain original. A central boarded door is set within an early 19th-century trellised porch with a tented metal canopy. Court rolls from May 1799 document that the cottage was built on manorial waste, having been recorded absent from the previous court roll in October 1798, as evidenced by records held at the Essex Record Office.
