Description
The dovecote, located approximately 35 metres north-east of Tolleshunt D'Arcy Hall, dates from the late 16th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The dovecote has a rectangular plan that runs approximately northwest to southeast, with its entrance on the south side. It is bonded to the adjacent wall at the northwest corner.
On the northwest side, there are two round-headed windows that contain early leaded diamond glazing. The structure has two gablet hips and a 18th-century louvre on the ridge. The original entrances for the birds in the gablets have been blocked. Inside, there are 14 rows of nesting boxes, with brick ledges provided for every alternate row. Each long side has 17 nesting boxes, while each short side has 10. The dovecote is situated on a moated site.
