Description

The Sail Lofts are a group of four yacht storage buildings located on Woodrolfe Road in Tollesbury, dating from around 1900 and altered in 1984-1985. They are timber-framed and weatherboarded, with three roofs covered in corrugated iron and one roof covered in corrugated asbestos. The buildings are arranged in a northwest-southeast line, identified alphabetically from A to D, all facing southwest.

Buildings A and C are two storeys with attics, while buildings B and D are two storeys. They are all supported by tapering square concrete piers. Building A features bracketed galleries with fixed ladder access to all three floors, while building C has similar galleries for the first floor and attic, and building D has a gallery for the first floor only. Each building has direct access via fixed ladders.

Building A includes a shop window and a pair of glazed doors on the lowest floor, which are recessed within two pairs of sliding doors with diagonal boarding. On the first floor, it has two pairs of similar sliding doors, and in the attic, there is a pair of doors with lights and a hoist above. Building B has one pair of sliding doors on the lowest floor, and on the upper floor, it has a pair of plain boarded doors and two shuttered windows. Both buildings C and D have two pairs of sliding doors with vertical boarding on the lowest floor and three pairs on the first floor. Building C features a pair of plain boarded doors with a hoist above in the attic gable, along with two shuttered windows. Building D has two hoists on the first floor, a casement window with a hoist above in the gable, and it is the building with the asbestos roof. All buildings have casement windows on the sides.
