Description
9 The Square is an early 19th-century house with an integral shop. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a shallow hipped slate roof with a square lateral chimneystack. The house has a two-bay lobby-entry layout, with an additional bay on the right that contains the shop.
The exterior of the house has a central entrance with a six-panel door, flanked by eight-over-eight paned sash windows without horns, all situated under cambered brick arches. There are three similar windows on the first floor, directly beneath the eaves. On the ground floor to the right, there is a twelve-pane curved bow window that projects forward, accompanied by narrow side lights and a groove on the underside of the fascia with a moulded cornice, all resting on a projecting cill. To the right of the bow window is the shop door, which features six small panes at the top. Above the ground floor shop, there are traces of painted advertising for a draper.
The interior has not been inspected. The building has group value with the adjacent No. 7 and other buildings on The Square. This house with its integral shop retains original windows and is notable for its good group value.
