Description

Barn, circa mid 16th century, situated about 40 metres north northeast of Carrolls Farmhouse. This timber-framed barn has weatherboard cladding and a plain tile roof. It comprises seven bays, with a midstrey (a central division) located in the third bay from the west. The westernmost bay appears to be a 20th-century addition, while the two easternmost bays are likely additions from the late 16th century. The barn features jowled posts with mortices for down braces to the sole plate, and edge-halved and bridled scarfs to the wallplates. Arch braces extend to the cambered tie beams, supporting a queen post roof with cambered collars, clasped purlins, and windbraces. Trenches are visible indicating the former presence of wattle and daub infill to the wall studs. The midstrey incorporates chamfered pegged knee braces and a 20th-century roof, and includes a low door opposite another entrance. The two eastern bays have been floored into soffit tenons with diminished haunches.
