Description
The White House, located in Gilwell Park, is a building that dates back to 1767. It was once known as Gilwell House and features an altered central block from the 16th or early 17th century, with late 18th or early 19th century wings. The structure is timber-framed and is faced with large whitewashed flush set slates on studding, topped with a Welsh slated roof. The building has two storeys and is adorned with casement windows that include glazing bars, with pointed arched windows on the first floor. There is a canted bay window at the center of the first floor and distinctive Cornish type chimney stacks with pointed tops, featuring narrow slates set vertically. A cornice runs along the top of the building, and there is a central extension on the ground floor. Notably, the poet William Alfred Gibbs lived in this house during the later 19th century.
