Description

Officers Accommodation Block, built in 1939-40 by the War Office.

Materials: a timber-framed, single-storey range, with timber rusticated weatherboard cladding, standing on a brick plinth, with a felted, shallow-pitched timber roof and metal casement windows.

Plan: of rectangular plan.

Exterior: the small, seven-bay, single-storey Officers Accommodation sits on a brick plinth and has a plain, flat panel timber door in each gable. Multi-paned metal casement windows define each of the other bays on both the east and west elevations.

Interior: the Officers Accommodation Block is accessed via a doorway in the north gable. The interior throughout is utilitarian with boarded ceilings and walls, although tongue and groove wainscoting to window height around corridors and all the rooms adds a domestic feel and a level of detail suggestive of higher-rank accommodation. The carpentry is functional but consistent, with one-over-three timber panel doors surviving throughout as does the 1940s ‘crittal’ style window furniture. Inside, a single corridor leads from front to back with small rooms, storage cupboards and bathrooms extending on either side. Most are laid out as bedrooms with one, at the southern end, arranged as a sitting room.
