Description
The Grotto at Lippittshill Lodge is a Grade II listed structure dating from the 1880s. It is a large half-sunken building that is partially raised as a mound. The grotto features reused ashlar stone with some carved mouldings on the cornices. Inside, there are small chambers that are illuminated by openings in the mound and hexagonal openings that once had a glazed dome above an arcade and niches. Outside, rough stone steps lead up to the mound, while inside, stone steps descend to a pool that is supported by rough arches and a central cyclopean pillar. The grotto is part of a group with Lippittshill Lodge.
